In 1951, Archbishop Fulton Sheen as the National Director of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith  proposed the Mission Rosary to promote unity and world peace. Sheen believed that we needed to pray not just for ourselves but for the whole world, especially the poor and vulnerable at home and throughout the world.

 Each decade of the Rosary is in a different color, denoting five regions of the earth (as Oceania or "the Pacific Islands" are not quite a continent and the Americas are two continents).  The idea is that the faithful could reflect and pray for these regions as they reflect on the Holy Mysteries of the Rosary.

Archbishop Sheen invited the People of God to spiritually take a tour of the world as they prayed the Rosary making a spiritual work of mercy by helping the Holy Father in evangelizing the world.

Mistaken Assumptions?

As the Catholic Church ends the Octave of the Assumption by commemorating the Memorial of the Queenship of the Virgin Mary, it seems apropos to end the Octave with a smile about "Mistaken Assumptions".

For me, this year's celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption was special.  Not for the liturgy in a handspun parish in the "Wild and Wonderful" state.  Preparing for the Holy Day of Obligation sparked some "Reconsidering the Assumption".  The Orthodox traditions on the Dormition of the Theotokis enhanced my appreciation of the Solemnity reflecting Christ's resurrection.  Taylor Marshall's reflections gives context on the Queenship of Mary and power over Purgatory. 

Bishop Venerable Fulton Sheen believed that the very foundation of humor is the ability to "see through things."  While Jason Bach's cartoon brought a smile to my face, it helped me see through humor a better understanding the the Assumption.

Catholics Are Christian Too

Shane Steven, the writer of the Catholic in the Ozarks blog, wrote an insightful and personal piece about how some fundamentalist Christian faithful that he has encountered in the Ozarks consider Catholics to be in a cult and hence not Christian.  

The gist is that the way they apply sola scriptura to the practice of faith makes it logical for them to come to that conclusion. Stevens does a yeoman's job of dispelling this myth through a historical and rational apologetic.  

For those curious about comparative theology and understanding who is part of the Christian brethren, this piece "Are Catholics Christians?" is highly commended.

I never thought that I would want to be a criminal.  But considering the way the Obama Administration imposed Obamacare without regard to the First Amendment protection of freedom of religious expression, it may be the time to embrace a rebel yell.

But to be honest, a tune that is more my taste that embodies the same spirit is from Les Miserables.
